I think it's okay to have a side quest with masks, singing frogs, a dancing scarecrow, or minor character who functions as comic relief (not Tingle). But the general tone was one of adventure with a stalwart protagonist. The visuals had an earthy vibe to them suggesting a quest of great consequence. It had a tone more in line with something like Robin Hood or Lord of the Rings than Mario-with-a-sword or Nintendo's version of Peter Pan. It'd be like if Super Mario 64 had an almost urban look to it, a sort of faux-grittiness, and then they went right back to the colorful visuals of the Super Nintendo era. It doesn't make sense unless it underperformed. |

Was it trying to be darker to compete with Final Fantasy 7? Was the tone out of the hands of whoever is presently responsible for the tone? Or was it less popular in Japan than it was in the US? It just seems like that should've been a turning point for the series. |

The instruction manual drew the monsters like they were something out of Dungeons and Dragons. By the time we got to A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening, there was more detail and the overall look was more cartoony. With Ocarina of Time, it really could've gone either way. So it seems a bit odd to me that they would have a mostly serious, somewhat dark story with moments of levity to just having an overall vibrant look to it. |

Why didn't they have a vibrant color scheme and give the Link a fixed expression of childlike curiosity rather than have an earthy look and a determined expression? It's like going from the Adam West Batman to The Dark Knight, then going right back to the way they did things in the 1960s. If you knew you wanted the series to be lighthearted, why go somewhat dark for your big 3D debut? |

I got one which resembled Goofy from the How to Swim short. It looked stupid as fuck; especially compared to something like the Space Mountain Mickey which had a starry design to it. I couldn't bring myself to throw it away because I'd spent my money on it. So it sat there and looked at me with this shit-eating grin as if to say, "Ha ha, mother fucker. You spent your money on me and you can't get it back." Then my sister's dog destroyed it and I was greatly pleased. |

Diesel was champion for more than ten months before he lost a match. Bret Hart was relegated to battling a kingly commentator and his evil dentist henchman. The good guys almost never lost. Crappy gimmicks were a dime a dozen. In addition to the aforementioned evil dentist, they had an evil hockey player, a minotaur, a plumber, a race car driver, a garbage man, a country musician, and a friendly clown with a little person doppelganger. Granted, that was just one year. Wherever the WWE is at now, it might take them years to recover. But I have trouble believing that this is the worst the product has ever been. |

It's funny because as dark as Batman was in the Nolan trilogy he was still overall a very heroic character and there was still quite a bit of humor. I didn't realize Nolan made more than one Batman trilogy. I'll have to see that one sometime. |

 I'm playing Gain Ground for Sega Genesis and the game starts you out with three characters: a white man with a gun, a white woman with a gun, and a black man with a spear. Now, the game is about a simulator gone awry and features character types like ninja, knights, and a viking warrior. But that still doesn't change the fact that the most prominently featured black character in the game is an African tribal warrior type. It got me thinking about games which lack diversity or inclusion. What if the next Legend of Zelda game saw Link stranded on an island with an elfin eared Friday as his companion throughout the game? What if Mario featured a Hispanic bandito right out of Treasure of the Sierra Madre? "I don't gotta show you any stinkin' mushrooms!" Obviously, neither is truly preferable. But when it comes to exclusively questionable or completely absent, which is the lesser of two evils? |
